Nashville Home Inspections - Closet Light Clearances

Nashville Home Inspection - Closet Light Clearances

Light bulbs in a closet can be very helpful. So what's wrong with this picture?

HINT: Light bulb temperatures can reach 150 degrees!

ANSWER: Incandescent light bulbs in closets should be enclosed in a protective bulb and maintain minimum spacing to combustibles. Failure to do so has been blamed for a tragic fire that killed 5 people in the Seattle area recently. In that situation a foam mattress is believed to have come in contact with a light bulb. Notice how close the pillows are to the light in this closet. Too close. The surface glass of a 60 watt incandescent light bulb can reach 150 degrees! That's HOT! Even if it is enclosed in a protective globe, minimum distances to combustibles still apply. See the recommended spacing guidelines offered by Code Check below.

Thank you,
